The class will be taught by NCBA Vice President, Ryan Miller who is a State Certified Instructor. This is an official NCWRC course which you will receive a complication card recognized by any State requiring an advanced archery course requirement.
This also is a pre-requisite course to the NCBA BCRS program that referrers members to bow hunt areas not available to the public. This program allows landowners and land managers to use NCBA BCRS members to help manage their deer populations.
I.B.E.P. or International Bowhunting Educational Program is a national program that offers certification in bowhunting. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission sponsors this class at various times during the year throughout the state. While being an experienced hunter is not necessary, the course is intended for those who already bow hunt and most of the time will be traveling to another state where the certification is required. However, many archery and bowhunting clubs are seeing the value of this course and are encouraging members to take part.
The I.B.E.P. course consists of several areas of instruction related to hunting and archery. A large part of the course involves ethics and hunter responsibility, stressing the role hunting plays in wildlife conservation and the role bowhunting serves in that capacity. Treestand safety is also a vital part of the course. Injuries involving improper handling of broadheads are the leading cause of injury among bowhunters, but the leading cause of death among all hunters in North Carolina is falling from treestands. By teaching the basics of treestand safety and the importance of wearing a full body harness, the I.B.E.P. course is doing its part to get information to the public.
The main part of the course involves archery equipment, practices and game care. These goals are achieved through a combination of range time where individuals can shoot the various types of bows, through in-depth classroom instruction and demonstrations on the types of equipment, how each works as well as care of equipment. Finally, during the game care portion of the class, a hunter’s tracking skills are tested by following a mock blood trail.
Together these exercises and instruction will train and certify any bowhunter to be better prepared for what may face him or her and help them achieve a successful hunt.
