DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Fork’s Foundation Class! This course is designed to lay a strong foundation in fly fishing\, specifically curated for 10-16 year anglers. Students will enjoy a full day of fun\, hands-on instruction\, led by Headwaters’ experienced and licensed fly fishing guides. Diving into basic entomology\, casting lessons\, fish identification and fish handling ethics\, gear overview\, rigging and more. Students will leave the day with a solid grasp of fly fishing “101’s” and be on their way to becoming an independent angler. \n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\nAll Gear Needed for the day and some educational take home materials! \n\n\n\nWhat’s not included\n\nNC Fishing License for Anglers 16 and older. Proceeds from the race support needed river accesses and log jam clearing projects to keep the French Broad River open to all users.\nThe Hellbender Relay Canoe Race is part of the Upper French Broad Riverfest!\nSaturday\, June 21st 2025\n\nImportant Information:1. “20 Miler Relay Race” limited to 15 Teams2. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required3. Check in Location & Time starts at 9:15am at Headwaters Outfitters. Teams must check in 45 min. prior to their start time.4. Race will start promptly at 10am5. Lifejackets are required to be worn for the entire race (teams will be disqualified if lifejackets are not worn).6. All teams are required to use Headwaters canoes provided. You can bring your own paddles and wear your own PFD.\n\n\nRules & Guidelines:1. Each “20 Miler” relay team is made of up to 4 paddlers\, broken down into pairs for each section of the race.2. “20 Miler” Race will consist of two 10 mile sections. SUMMARY:Annual Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day
DESCRIPTION:Support the health and future of the Upper French Broad River\, by volunteering for our Annual Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day!\nThe French Broad River Clean-Up remains the best volunteer gig in town! Since the inception of “The Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day” in 1992\, the annual river clean-up has netted more than 3\,500 garbage bags\, 4\,500 old tires and roughly 15 additional tons of trash along the upper French Broad. Over 3\,000 volunteers have participated in the event\, many of them returning year after year.\n\nVolunteers show up at Headwaters Outfitters at 9:00 am. Everyone will be assigned Headwaters Outfitters canoes (2 people max per canoe\, no kayaks please)\, paddles\, life jackets\, and garbage bags. Participants should bring sturdy gloves\, river shoes\, and tools such as trash grabbers or long-handled barbecue tongs to grab trash with. It’s always a good idea to bring a change of clothing for afterwards! After a light complimentary sponsored breakfast\, volunteers will hit the river to collect as much trash as they can.\n\nVolunteers need to have solid paddling skills\, be team players\, and be ready to get dirty and work hard. Headwaters Outfitters will provide transportation to and from the river for the start and end of the day. Once back at the shop\, a sponsored lunch will be provided thanks to generous donations from community members and businesses.\n\nAnyone who would like to donate funds can send a check to the Headwaters Outfitters\, P.O. Box 1057\, Rosman\, NC 28772.\nNOTE: Make checks out to “The French Broad River Clean Up”.\nAll volunteers must pre-register to secure your spot. SUMMARY:Heritage Day Paddle on the French Broad
DESCRIPTION:Experience the history of the French Broad and surrounding areas on this relaxing guided paddle! \n\n\nActivity details\n\n\nOur group will meet at 10am at Champion Park and plan to get on the water at 10:30am. Advanced reservations required\, please pre-select what type of boat you would like to paddle (kayak\, canoe\, tandem kayak). This guided paddle down the French Broad will be a relaxing way to take in the beautiful scenery while learning about the rich history of the area. Please come dressed appropriately for the weather that day as we will take off rain or shine. Our shuttle will be waiting to pick us up at the take out and shuttle us back to Champion Park where you can enjoy the Heritage Day celebrations\, vendors and community!\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\nIncluded in the price of your ticket is a boat of your choosing (canoe\, kayak\, or tandem kayak)\, paddle\, PFD life jacket\, and shuttle service. This trip also includes a guide who will lead your trip on the water and share the history of the area. \n\n\n\nWhat’s not included\n\n\nDry bags are not included (we do have some available for purchase at our shop)\n\n*Food and beverages are not included \n*Gratuity for your guide and/or shuttle drivers if you feel so inclined 🙂 \n\n\n\nItinerary\n\n10am – 10:30am Check in with our River Host at Champion Park\, make sure all waivers are signed \n10:30am depart Champion Park and paddle down the French Broad River \n12pm-12:30pm Take Out and be shuttled back to Champion Park \n12:30pm Enjoy the Heritage Day festivities! \n\n\n\nHighlights\n\nThis is a great opportunity to experience the beautiful French Broad River with an experienced guide who can share about the rich history of the area. \n\n——————————— \n\n\nAdditional information:\n\n\nCheck-in details\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease arrive around 10am to check in and prepare to get on the water at 10:30am. Make sure you have your waivers signed ahead of time. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\nDress appropriately for the weather that day (it’s always a good idea to dress in layers this time of year\, with sun protection and rain protection). Everyone paddling must wear shoes and a PFD (we provide the PFD life jacket). Bring water and a snack if you are so inclined! Remember that items taken on the river can get wet or lost – come prepared with a dry bag for your essential items. \n\n\n\nSpecial requirements\n\nAll participants must be able to swim with a life jacket on.

SUMMARY:Angler Entomology with Guide Patrick Weaver
DESCRIPTION:This course teaches you how to select a fly to match what the trout are eating. The course will be a combination of classroom and practical field sampling focusing on insect hatches that produce selective feeding. In the classroom\, you will learn about the “five seasons” and the active insects during each season. In addition\, you will learn the conditions for each season\, when to fish\, and what type of water to focus on. One will also learn about the types of flies for various hatch stages and how to select flies to best match the hatch and how to present them. On the river\, you will learn sampling techniques and collecting information to identify hatches. Each participant will receive a copy of The Hatches of Pisgah Forest for reference. This class is the second of a two part series.
