Head Paddling Guide Danielle Matthews is a recent outstanding graduate from Brevard College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education. Danielle arrived in the Brevard area as a Recreation Intern through The Student Conservation Association/AmeriCorps for Pisgah National Forest mainly working as a Lifeguard at Sliding Rock Waterfall, which led her to fall in love with the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding the forest and the local community of all that is Brevard. After her internship she desired to stay in the area and applied to Brevard College as a transfer student completing her last two years with many achievements obtained. Throughout her success at Brevard College she continuously made Honor’s and Dean’s List academically; while collecting many skills, experiences, and certifications along the way. Danielle's completed trainings and certifications include various skills from Swift Water Rescue, Search and Rescue, Leave-No-Trace Trainer, Wilderness First Responder, and an ACA L3: Tandem/Solo Canoe Instructor.
Danielle loves being a part of the local Brevard community and volunteering her time when available. During her time in the area over the past 4 years she has worked and interned for many aspiring positions including a Lifeguard for Pisgah National Forest-Sliding Rock, Mountain Bike Guide for Gwynn Valley Summer Camp, Program Leader for non-profit organization Mountain Roots, Inc., Seasonal Park Technician at Chimney Rock State Park, and other various jobs. While attending Brevard College Danielle became a local avid Lover, Environmentalist, Hiker, Mountain Biker, Backpacker, Paddler, Rock Climber, and when she is not busy between day-to-day life she loves to be outside enjoying any of these activities. This past Summer 2016 she spent her Senior year canoeing and sea-kayaking with 12 class members through a 6 credit link-course “Voice of the River” collectively over 311 miles, starting on Lake Lure to the Headwaters Basin of the Broad River, then heading to Charleston Harbor over 21 consecutive days. This led her to achieve a Canoe Instructor certificate the semester following, which she looks forward to applying her skills, knowledge and experiences this season at Headwaters Outfitter.
