Around mile marker 20, the French Broad begins to widen. As it flows towards Asheville, several major tributaries such as the North and South Mills, empty into it, making it the largest watershed in Western NC. This "broad" river provides great habitat for the feisty smallmouth bass. Best accessed from a drift boat when the river has been at a consistent level for 2-3 days. This section can quickly lose it's clarity with any rain and can hold color for a few days.
