Departing from Headwaters Outfitters at 10:00 a.m. (arrive by 9:30 a.m.)\, the four-hour outing blends nature observation with relaxed paddling to view spring wildflowers\, migrating songbirds and river wildlife along the French Broad River. Trips include paddling gear\, a river shuttle and guide service; snacks and drinks are available for purchase at the shop. If we have to cancel in case of Thunder/Lightening\, Air/Water Temps\, High Winds\, or High Water Levels\, then we will provide a full refund. For advanced notice cancellations we are willing to work with you the best we can. If you cancel 7 days before your trip\, we will provide a full refund. If you cancel 1-6 days prior to trip\, we will provide a 50% refund or a 100% credit to use for another time (no expiration). SUMMARY:Guided Bear Lake Kayaking Trip
DESCRIPTION:Bear Lake\, also referred to as Bear Creek Lake\, covers 500 acres and features 13 miles of shoreline. Bear Lake was created in the 1950s by damming the east fork of the Tuckasegee River to provide hydroelectric power for the area. Today\, it is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Western North Carolina. Bear Lake is regularly stocked with fish by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission. \nThe lake provides the perfect sea kayaking day trip for all paddling skill levels. Enjoy a shore lunch surrounded by the mountains of the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forest. In the warmer months\, the lake sees more motor boat action\, which is why we only offer this great trip during the spring and fall months! \nLed by Headwaters Outfitters Paddling Guide\, enjoy a island shore lunch surrounded by the mountains of the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forest. \nThe trip is an out-and-back (5 miles total) to the cove of Sols Creek Waterfall\, with an optional 15 min. Intermediate Hike to the base of the waterfall. \nReservations are required. There is a minimum of 3 and maximum of 8 guest per trip. \nOffered in Spring and Fall on Thursday’s. \nPlease email for info@headwatersoutfitters.com for private group trip inquiries and availability. \nShuttle: Average 45 minutes one way.\nDepart from Headwaters at 9:15am and return by 3:30-4:00pm. \nLunch is provided\, let your guide know if you have any dietary restrictions. \nWhat to bring:\nDress in layers\, with quick dry material preferred. Proceeds from the race support needed river accesses and log jam clearing projects to keep the French Broad River open to all users.\nThe Hellbender Relay Canoe Race is part of the Upper French Broad Riverfest!\nSaturday\, June 21st 2025\n\nImportant Information:1. “20 Miler Relay Race” limited to 15 Teams2. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required3. Check in Location & Time starts at 9:15am at Headwaters Outfitters. Teams must check in 45 min. prior to their start time.4. Race will start promptly at 10am5. Lifejackets are required to be worn for the entire race (teams will be disqualified if lifejackets are not worn).6. All teams are required to use Headwaters canoes provided. You can bring your own paddles and wear your own PFD.\n\n\nRules & Guidelines:1. Each “20 Miler” relay team is made of up to 4 paddlers\, broken down into pairs for each section of the race.2. “20 Miler” Race will consist of two 10 mile sections. SUMMARY:Annual Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day
DESCRIPTION:Support the health and future of the Upper French Broad River\, by volunteering for our Annual Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day!\nThe French Broad River Clean-Up remains the best volunteer gig in town! Since the inception of “The Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day” in 1992\, the annual river clean-up has netted more than 3\,500 garbage bags\, 4\,500 old tires and roughly 15 additional tons of trash along the upper French Broad. Over 3\,000 volunteers have participated in the event\, many of them returning year after year.\n\nVolunteers show up at Headwaters Outfitters at 9:00 am. Everyone will be assigned Headwaters Outfitters canoes (2 people max per canoe\, no kayaks please)\, paddles\, life jackets\, and garbage bags. Participants should bring sturdy gloves\, river shoes\, and tools such as trash grabbers or long-handled barbecue tongs to grab trash with. It’s always a good idea to bring a change of clothing for afterwards! After a light complimentary sponsored breakfast\, volunteers will hit the river to collect as much trash as they can.\n\nVolunteers need to have solid paddling skills\, be team players\, and be ready to get dirty and work hard. Headwaters Outfitters will provide transportation to and from the river for the start and end of the day. Once back at the shop\, a sponsored lunch will be provided thanks to generous donations from community members and businesses.\n\nAnyone who would like to donate funds can send a check to the Headwaters Outfitters\, P.O. Box 1057\, Rosman\, NC 28772.\nNOTE: Make checks out to “The French Broad River Clean Up”.\nAll volunteers must pre-register to secure your spot. Jenkins Community Center featuring Robert Worthing (Keynote speaker from Tenkara Guides LLC)\, Amanda Hoffner (Lady Tenkara Bum)\, Luong Tam of Tenkara Tanuki\, and local Tenkara fishing guides. \n• Sunday\, May 18th: Continue with hands-on workshops and presentations at Headwaters Outfitters in Rosman\, NC. \nAmanda Hoffner of the Heritage Tenkara Project is organizing the event\, building on the success of the Eastern Sierras Boot Camp. She aims to gather anglers from across the country while supporting Western North Carolina’s recovery after Hurricane Helene. Local guides Ben Colonnese (Fixed Line Appalachia) and Chris Jameson (Trout Trails) will share their expertise and are available for guided Tenkara trips. SUMMARY:Angler Entomology with Guide Patrick Weaver
DESCRIPTION:This course teaches you how to select a fly to match what the trout are eating. The course will be a combination of classroom and practical field sampling focusing on insect hatches that produce selective feeding. In the classroom\, you will learn about the “five seasons” and the active insects during each season. In addition\, you will learn the conditions for each season\, when to fish\, and what type of water to focus on. One will also learn about the types of flies for various hatch stages and how to select flies to best match the hatch and how to present them. On the river\, you will learn sampling techniques and collecting information to identify hatches. Each participant will receive a copy of The Hatches of Pisgah Forest for reference. This class is the second of a two part series.
