A guided “Sea” Kayaking adventure on a special hidden gem here in Western North Carolina. Bear Creek Lake, covers 500 acres and features 13 miles of shoreline and is home to Sols Creek Falls, a beautiful cascade waterfall.

About the Trip:

Bear Lake, also referred to as Bear Creek Lake, covers 500 acres and features 13 miles of shoreline. Bear Lake was created in the 1950s by damming the east fork of the Tuckasegee River to provide hydroelectric power for the area. Today, it is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Western North Carolina. Bear Lake is regularly stocked with fish by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission.

The lake provides the perfect kayaking day trip for all paddling skill levels. Lead by Headwaters Outfitters Paddling Guide Danielle Ennis, enjoy an island shore lunch surrounded by the mountains of the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forest.
The trip is an out-and-back (5 miles total) to the cove of Sols Creek Waterfall, with an optional 15 min. intermediate hike to the base of the waterfall.

Reservations are required. There is a minimum of 3 guests and maximum of 8 guest per trip.

Shuttle: Average 45 minutes one way.
Depart from Headwaters Shop at 9:15am and return by 3:30-4:00pm.
Lunch is provided. Please let us know if you have any dietary needs or restrictions upon booking.

What to bring:

  • Dress in layers, with quick dry material preferred. Rain/ wind outer shell is good. Light hiking shoes along with a water shoe/ sandal, some folks maybe able to hike and boat in one style. Chacos, Tevas or similar footwear is ideal! 
  • Daypack with sunscreen, water, light snacks, personal needs are highly recommended.
  • Sunglasses and hats are very helpful.
  • Cameras, binoculars and any guide books, (plants, birds etc.)
