Come spend an evening with us in downtown Brevard and get up close with one of the Southern Appalachians’ most remarkable—and most at-risk—native species: the Southern Appalachian brook trout.

Headwaters Outfitters and the Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited are proud to bring a living aquarium display to our downtown shop, showcasing North Carolina’s only native trout. Just like the Trout in the Classroom aquariums found in schools across our surrounding counties, this isn’t just a tank of fish. It’s a hands-on educational experience that brings cold-water conservation to life.

**What You’ll Learn:**

– Why the Southern Appalachian brook trout is uniquely native to our region — and why it matters
– How Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom program is inspiring the next generation of conservation stewards
– What we can all do to protect the cold, clean watersheds these fish depend on
– The connection between healthy trout populations and a healthy French Broad River watershed

Whether you’re a lifelong fly angler, a curious newcomer, or someone who simply loves these mountains and the wild things that live here, this evening is for you. Grab a drink, meet your neighbors, and connect with the brook trout’s story.

Tom Champeau
Tom Champeau is a board member of the Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited, coordinates the chapter’s Trout in the Classroom program, and is a community science volunteer at the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A retired fisheries biologist, Tom worked for 38 years with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and  chaired the National Fish Habitat Partnership from 2014 – 2018.
Stephanie Adams
Stephanie Adams is a Certified Naturalist with a rich background in conservation, outdoor education, and public land stewardship. She previously served as a River Ranger with the U.S. Forest Service, served as Education Chair for local and State Boards of Trout Unlimited and as the Assistant Director of Education for the Cradle of Forestry Interpretive Association, helping expand environmental education programs rooted in the history and ecology of the Pisgah National Forest. She is a NC Wildlife Resources Commission certified fly fishing instructor and the founder of the Brook Trout aquarium in the Brevard/Transylvania county Visitors Center.
